Wireless Internet access using WiFi (802.11) technology is becoming more common. Seattle is pretty good about having plenty of WiFi hotspots, but most of them (especially in bookstores and chain coffee stores) are commercial (e.g. T-Mobile or the soon-defunct Cometa), and require monthly fees.

  • SeattleWireless is a project to create a free WiFi Metropolitan Access Network. And some ISPs encourage users to share their connection and their neighbors via their own access points and split the total cost.
  • Coffee and Wireless in Seattle has a list of coffee shops with wireless access around town, a search feature that lets you search by distance from a location (very handy). And it's a wiki to boot! A map using the info on this site and based off of the Google Maps API has been created.
