Star Life on the Oasis is not defunct. I don't know much about the adjoining cinema, but at any rate, this shop is still open. (Seems to me it was a name change from Grand Illusion to Still Life to Star Life)
What, no Starbucks? The original location at least ought to get a mention for history's sake.

I went once when I was in high school to a real beatnik coffeehouse on Yesler Way just West off of 1st. Ave. At least I think it was on Yesler. It was downstairs. It was dark and starkly lit. Lots of smoke. Older guys wearing beards and berets and sunglasses. Some guy got up and played a flute. Other people read poetry that made no sense to me. They served huge cups of flavored coffee. Not even sure if it was espresso. This was in early 1966. Anybody remember the Fringies in the U-district? They pre-dated Hippies there. 198.145.82.56 06:29, November 4, 2009 (UTC)
